Scholarships

As an organization, assisting youth athletes in the attainment of a post-secondary education ranks atop our list. As a result, we are committed to developing recruitment strategies that connect athletes with collegiate recruiters across the country. Furthermore, we are devoted to mitigating the expenses associated with attending a college or university; our scholarships are available to all graduating seniors who participate at any of our Speed Capital events and meet the minimum academic and community service requirements.

The scholarships available are each tied to a cause or charitable group that is near and dear to the hearts of the members of our organization. In addition to aiding student athletes with their tuition, books, or room & board, we are simultaneous looking to raise national awareness on the issues or diseases listed below.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 13.7 million children ranging from ages 2-19 currently suffer from Childhood Obesity. This epidemic’s prevalence was 13.9% among 2- to 5-year-olds, 18.4% among 6- to 11-year-olds, and 20.6% among 12- to 19-year-olds. Consequently, these children are at a much greater risk for poor health and the development of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease.

A major component in our overall objective is to increase participation in youth track & field throughout the country; the average age of a participant perfectly coincides with the 13.7 million children suffering from childhood obesity. If we are successfully able to increase participation in the sport by 10% in each state, given the rigorous training affiliated with track & field,

The Speed Capital Childhood Obesity Awareness Scholarship aims to shed light on this epidemic while simultaneously providing an outlet to combat it. This scholarship is available to all graduating seniors that participated at a Speed Capital event at any of its locations. Two of these scholarships are available per annum, each valued at $1000.00, they will be paid directly to the college or university of the student athlete’s choosing.

To apply for this scholarship, candidates must partner with a local youth track & field coach to create or increase participation of an existing track club. This process will be documented in a Power-Point or 2000-word outline which is submitted along with a copy of their most recent high school transcript (minimum 3.0 GPA) and a copy of their official SAT scores (minimum 1000) or ACT scores (minimum 20).

Speed Capital’s Clifton Cargill Jr. Scholarship is dedicated to its namesake who was gunned down senselessly on January 5th 2020 while awaiting the arrival of his teammates for their daily ride. Clifton was an avid lover of track & field; his son is the 2019 Jamaican U20 110M hurdle champion and currently competes at the division one level in the states.

Clifton was an exceptional human being whose life was cut short as a result of gun violence. It is our opinion that student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional academic prowess should be allotted the financial support needed to pursue their academic ambitions at the collegiate level. As a result, we have created the Speed Capital Academic Excellence Scholarship; this is intended to recognize and reward student-athletes for their commitment to their grades throughout their high school careers.
